Why You Should Do PRP Injections Instead of Steroid Injections for Joint Pain

Written By Brady Wirick

Joint pain sucks! I know from first hand experience! Recently I injured my shoulder during a work out and it disrupted my routine for months (Yes. I am a wimp and don’t tolerate pain well. LOL). I finally gave in and did Platelet Rich Plasma and I am so glad that I did! At the time of this blog, I am 3 weeks post treatment and my strength is finally coming back! My range of motion is finally completely normal, my strength is mostly back, and the pain is 80% gone!

So, what exactly is PRP? Platelet Rich Plasma is a regenerative medical treatment that utilizes the body’s own natural healing mechanisms to address joint injuries and chronic pain. The procedure involves extracting a sample of the patient’s blood, which is then centrifuged to isolate and concentrate the platelets. These platelets, rich in growth factors and healing properties, are then injected directly into the affected joint, stimulating tissue repair and reducing inflammation.

Here are three compelling reasons why you should use PRP before you get another traditional steroid injection for joint pain management:

1. Preserving Joint Integrity: Steroids, while effective in reducing inflammation and alleviating pain in the short term, come with significant drawbacks. Repeated use of steroids can accelerate joint degeneration, ultimately fast tracking you to joint replacement surgery. In contrast, PRP promotes tissue regeneration and repair without compromising the structural integrity of the joint. By harnessing the body’s innate healing mechanisms, PRP offers a more sustainable approach to managing joint injuries, potentially delaying or even averting the need for invasive interventions.

2. Holistic Healing: Unlike steroids, which primarily function as anti-inflammatory agents, PRP offers a multifaceted approach to healing. In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, PRP contains a myriad of growth factors and cytokines that orchestrate the body’s natural repair processes. By signaling for cellular proliferation, collagen synthesis, and angiogenesis, PRP facilitates comprehensive tissue regeneration, addressing the underlying cause of the pain rather than merely masking symptoms. This holistic approach not only provides long-lasting relief but also promotes overall joint health and functionality.

3. Natural and Autologous: One of the most compelling aspects of PRP therapy is its natural origin. Unlike steroids, which are synthetic compounds introduced into the body, PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, making it inherently biocompatible and devoid of foreign substances. By harnessing the body’s innate healing potential, PRP minimizes the risk of adverse reactions or complications, offering a safe and personalized treatment option. Additionally, as an autologous therapy, PRP eliminates concerns regarding compatibility or rejection, ensuring optimal therapeutic outcomes.

In conclusion, Platelet Rich Plasma therapy represents a promising frontier in the field of regenerative medicine, offering a safe, effective, and natural solution for joint pain and injuries. By prioritizing tissue regeneration over symptomatic relief, PRP addresses the root cause of the problem, empowering patients to regain mobility, functionality, and quality of life. Whether you’re an athlete striving to overcome a sports injury or an individual navigating the challenges of degenerative joint disease, PRP holds the potential to revolutionize your journey toward recovery. Say goodbye to joint pain and embrace the transformative power of Platelet Rich Plasma therapy. Your joints will thank you.
