From Food to Fuel: Mastering the Energy Conversion for Optimal Health

Written By Brady Wirick

I drive a half ton diesel pickup. I drove the 518 miles to my mom’s house in St. George Utah yesterday on 20 gallons of fuel. It runs efficiently and sips fuel, as long as you fill it with diesel. Accidentally pour gasoline into the tank, and the result would be catastrophic, potentially leading to an explosion.

Our bodies operate on a similar principle of specificity. Feed them the wrong fuel—ultra-processed “foods” that are far removed from their natural state—and our health will falter.

The consequence? Depending on your genetic predisposition, a cascade of health issues may ensue, ranging from heart disease and hypertension to diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disorders, depression, and anxiety.

In the intricate dance of the universe, one principle remains steadfast: the law of conservation of energy, which posits that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only transformed. This principle is not just a cornerstone of physics but also a fundamental aspect of our very existence. Our bodies, marvels of nature’s engineering, are adept at converting the potential energy stored in food into the kinetic energy that fuels our lives.

The journey of energy conversion begins the moment we take our first bite of food. Through digestion, food is broken down into its constituent nutrients—carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. These are the raw materials our bodies use to generate energy. The actual process of conversion, however, occurs in the cellular powerhouses known as mitochondria, where glucose and oxygen undergo a remarkable transformation into ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of the cell.

The prevalence of chronic diseases in modern society can often be traced back to our dietary choices. Despite the advancements in acute medical science, chronic disease is at an all time high and our life expectancy is dropping.  There are 192 medical subspecialties that are floundering around chasing symptoms and not addressing the root causes of these conditions. The focus needs to  shift towards eliminating the source of the problem.

Taking Control of Your Health

The good news is, you have the power to redirect your health journey. By making conscious dietary choices, you can support your body’s natural energy conversion processes and mitigate the risk of chronic diseases. Here’s how:

Foods to Remove

  1. Refined Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners: These can cause spikes in blood sugar levels and are linked to a host of health issues.
  2. Refined Grains: Often stripped of their nutritional value, refined grains can contribute to inflammation and other health problems.
  3. Refined Vegetable and Seed Oils: High in unhealthy fats, these oils can disrupt your body’s balance.
  4. Corn: Especially in its processed forms, corn can contribute to dietary imbalances. (eating Landon’s corn in August straight off the trucks won’t kill you, but it is not a vegetable!)
  5. Soda, Diet Soda, and Energy Drinks: Loaded with sugar, artificial sweeteners, and other harmful substances, these beverages offer no nutritional benefits.

Foods to Consume

  1. Omega-3 Fats: Found in fish or available as supplements, omega-3 fats support brain health and reduce inflammation.
  2. Probiotic-Containing Foods: These support gut health, essential for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients.
  3. Micronutrients through Organic Fruits and Vegetables: A rich source of essential vitamins and minerals.
  4. Fiber: Key for digestive health, fiber also helps regulate blood sugar levels.
  5. Protein: Essential for building and repairing tissues, protein also plays a crucial role in energy production.

Embarking on this dietary journey is not just about avoiding certain foods; it’s about embracing a lifestyle that prioritizes health and well-being. By aligning our dietary choices with the law of conservation of energy, we can optimize our body’s energy conversion processes and pave the way for a healthier, more vibrant life.
